When a recent string of severe weather rolled through the Midwest, one homeowner in rural Indiana decided it was time to take action. Their property, surrounded by open land and few natural barriers, left them vulnerable during tornado season. That’s when they called TDW Earthwerx, their trusted local excavation and storm shield shelter dealer.

Project Objective
To install a Storm Shield 6 Tornado Shelter on the homeowner’s property, providing a safe and reliable storm protection solution for their family of five. The client wanted peace of mind knowing that during high winds or tornado warnings, they had a shelter that was built to last.

Our Process
We began with a site visit and evaluation, choosing a location near the home that was easily accessible and slightly elevated to encourage drainage. Once confirmed, our crew brought in a compact excavator and began digging the hole to spec.
The Storm Shield 6 shelter arrived pre-manufactured, so our focus was on precise excavation, leveling, and backfilling. Using the dual-point lifting eye, we safely lowered the 750 lb. fiberglass shelter into place.
We were able to complete the install in just under four hours, with no need for concrete. Once in place, the unit was backfilled and compacted to ensure long-term stability. We walked the homeowner through the shelter’s features, from the ventilation system to the secure latching door.

The Result
Now, the homeowner and their family can rest easy knowing they have a FEMA-compliant tornado shelter built to withstand extreme weather and time. With a comfortable capacity of up to 10 adults, they also have the ability to offer neighbors safety in an emergency.
Why Storm Shield
Storm Shield Tornado Shelters are more than a product—they’re a legacy. Built from durable, corrosion-resistant fiberglass, each shelter is designed to meet or exceed FEMA and ICC guidelines, ensuring generations of reliable protection.
